Educating Your Mind Outside of the Classroom

By Shivani Patel on August 30, 2016

Educating ourselves, and our mind, is essential.

Most of our lives have probably been spent inside of a school, learning things like how to solve a math equation, or what exactly chemistry is.

There is no denying in the fact that school educates us and gives us an immense amount of knowledge. However, how much do we actually know?

Most of us may not realize how important it is to educate, and challenge, our minds. On days off, we may be very quick to go on the internet, and watch a bunch of shows on Netflix. While it is great that we have access to all of this, it is time for us to use the internet to help us grow more than we already have.

What is currently happening in politics? What is going in the United States, and outside of the United States? Researching this type of information can help you become more aware of your surroundings.

Take time out to look up books and read for fun. Although it may seem as if it’s better to spend time relaxing and doing leisure activities, we must keep our mind active. Our brain never stops working throughout the day, so why not feed it with something healthy?

Here are a couple of sites you can visit daily, or when you can, to teach yourselves a little bit more than you may learn inside of a 2 hour class on calculus

  • The History Site lists events that have occurred on the current day. For some, it may be fascinating to learn what happened 1, 10, or even 100 years ago. There are various events listed for each day, some related to natural disasters, while others are focused on news regarding celebrities.
  • Info Please is a similar website, that lists events in a timeline form, that goes back very far in time. Both websites allow you to browse a calendar as well, so that you can see what happened on specific dates, such as your birthday!
  • Fact of The Day lists various facts, through an animated mean. Some facts are related to countries, while others may be connected to fast food resturant and statistics on mental illness. To make sure that people know the facts are not made up, the website also lists the source where they found the information from. Not only do you get to learn a fact, but you have the opportunity to read more about the specific topic!
  • Daily Jigsaw Puzzle has a different jigsaw puzzle everyday for people to solve. The site shows how you compare to the fastest time, and the average time. You can also pick what type of cut you want your puzzle to be, along with the shape of the puzzle pieces. Jigsaw puzzles can be a great way to challenge yourself and keep your mind active. They are fun as well!
  • Riddle of the Day has a riddle up daily for you to solve! Challenge yourself, and your mind by solving riddles. Although they might be a little difficult, it’s a great way to exercise your mind.

A professor standing in front of a classroom cannot teach you as much as you can teach yourself. Educating yourself, and your mind, is essential. Spend time googling, and researching any topics you can think of. Reading journal articles, and even opinion pieces, can open up your mind.

Learning and educating yourself can be more enjoyable when your attitude doesn’t say “I have to do this,” but rather says “I want to do this”
